You cannot speedup things on external drives or NAS as the main workload of Time Machine is on the Mac where Time Machine is running.
That's why you think it's slow but it isn't slow. Time Machine has no performance issues but causes a huge load of additional data. The performance issue can be described as "each block of the hardware has to be packed into a normal network protocol" which causes a massive additional load of data to be send through the network. If Time Machine is working in a network, then AFP Apple File Protocol has to be present and will be used - for example if you want to backup on a NAS. The amount of additional data created to handle all that stuff is massive. Time Machine created sparsebundle data contains all related data of the original source. You store block level data onto another disk with its own block level mechanism. If you are using external hard drives, then Time Machine creates an environment on this disk to make the disk usable. This image contains every single block of the original source. All data will be written into a so called sparsebundle, an image of the original data. Means that Time Machine is not backup up files but original parts of the drive. The performance issues are bound to the way how Time Machine is doing the backup, it's a block level based backup. Hi Machine is a great tool to backup data, I would stay there. I've used in in the past and had good luck with it as well.

I've used iDrive for Mac and had great luck with it. Local media (external drives for example) cannot protect against such things. These days I generally go for cloud backups if you are looking for something that will keep your data safe in the event of a catastrophic event, such as a fire, flood, tornado, etc. How much data are we talking, a few GB, TB's of data, etc?Īre you set on local backups or are you open to alternatives? What kind of data are you looking to back up? Just basic files, databases, etc?
There might be a problem with your internal or external drive.Ī few questions to help get the conversation going and to narrow down what might be best for you I've never noticed a major performance issue with it (I backup to NAS systems usually, not external drives), if it's running very slow it might be a good idea to look into why. Having spent most of my life as a Windows user I honestly wish I could find a backup as good as Time Machine for Windows.
